Recent Book — Evicted

  • Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond. Whew what a tough read. We have been so fortunate to always have access to housing and family in our lives. Life for people at the bottom of the housing ladder is horrific. inhuman, even in our “modern” society. Good chapter at end on what kind of remedies we should support, we clearly need to do more.

  1. Glad you were able to read the book John. Desmond and Raj Chetty (Harvard Economist focused on poverty alleviation) have been doing some interesting work out here with folks like the King County Housing Authority on “scattered site” housing of homeless folks that appears to have dramatically positive impacts on their ability to stay housed and eventually lift themselves out of poverty. Also, McKinsey is getting ready to release a 2nd round of pro-bono work on the homelessness situation in King County and its direct connection to a 2/3 drop in the supply of deeply affordable (0-30% of AMI) housing in this county over the past ten years or so. We’ve got some real work to do as a community!
